Menu Plan Monday

Summer is in full swing around our house – which means schedules are out the window and sunshine and swimming are high priorities.

We had a great weekend with SuperMan home for three full days – lots of family time and fun in between our chores.  This week the girls have an art camp to go to, which is a good thing because they have reached the point where boredom kicks in and harassing each other becomes the chief form of entertainment. Which is not good for anyone around here.

So, hopefully, the extra distraction of art camp will give them the push they need to get over the summer doldrums.

This week’s menu plan includes a few things left over from last week that never got cooked and a lot of easy-to-prepare items.  I’m all about making things easy on the cook – especially since that’s me!

The girls were brave this weekend and tried all sorts of new foods – spinach & artichoke dip, grilled polenta… the dip was a hit (why wouldn’t it be? it’s full of cheese!) and the polenta, well, not as much.  The consensus was that the polenta, which was a sun-dried tomato, store-bought variety, was bitter and mushy.  I may get brave one day and try to make my own, but I was really proud of them for being game enough to try something new not once, but twice in the same day!

  • Monday: Either Pizza Braid or some Asian Chicken Stir Fry (not sure yet which)
  • Tuesday: Chicken Noodle Casserole
  • Wednesday: Grilled pork chops, grilled corn & veggies
  • Thursday: Grilled steaks (SuperMan got a deal on some steak) buttered potatoes and veggies
  • Friday night Mexican (our tradition)
  • Saturday: something on the grill (seeing a pattern here?)

I’m also thinking I will make some of my chicken pasta salad to eat on – and maybe some chicken salad for sandwiches.  Cool and easy eating.

I’m hungry for some pasta carbonara – anyone have a good recipe they would share?

But now it is time to go wake up the monkeys and get them ready for their day. Hope you have a wonderful one as well!

What I’m Reading Right Now

What I'm reading right nowOr, rather, what I just finished reading…

While I was on my recent business trip, I decided to purchase a few “real” books because there is that interminable period of time on the plane when you can’t have your electronics turned on and I don’t think you can bring enough magazines to fill that gap of time – or at least I don’t want to – they are heavy (and expensive!)

So, while I was in California, I stopped by the local bookstore and picked up a few books to read. I had forgotten what a heady experience it is to enter a bookstore – the smells,  the sight of all those books – it’s just heaven to me. As I was all alone (another wonderful experience) I spent probably close to an hour or more just browsing the shelves and looking at all sorts of books.

It’s something you don’t even realize you miss, when you move to digital books; the experience of being in a bookstore – perusing the stacks and stumbling across books you didn’t even know existed.

I was in heaven.

And one of the books I stumbled across was this one –The Yard, by Alex Grecian.  I have to say, it was one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

If you follow me on Facebook, you may remember that I asked for book recommendations a while back. I had been reading a series and was finished with that series and in a bit of a quandary about what to read  next. I got some great suggestions but none really “grabbed” me as I read them and I was still looking for a new book to suck me in and take me away from the world for a few hours.

The Yard certainly did that.  My flight home just flew by (sorry, I couldn’t resist) and I found myself wishing I could just snuggle up on the sofa and read until I finished the book once I got home.  (the kids were having none of that, though)

The story is an old-fashioned murder mystery, set in Victorian England around the time of the Jack the Ripper murders.  In the story, a fledgling murder squad is formed at Scotland Yard and the detectives have been tasked with solving the murders occurring in London.  They have their hands full, often with close to 100 unsolved cases each. Confidence is low, morale is lower and they are scorned by the citizens who feel they were let down when the Jack the Ripper murders were never solved.

Enter Walter Day, a recently promoted detective who really feels he doesn’t quite belong on the murder squad even though he was hand picked by his predecessor for the job.  Walter is recently married – to a young lady above his station – and is hoping the detective position will afford him the lifestyle his wife had been accustomed to before their marriage.

When a train case is abandoned at the local station and the body of a Murder Squad detective is found inside, Walter is assigned to the case, simply because he was the first on the scene.  He teams up with Dr. Bernard Kingsley, a local physician who has appointed himself to the coroner’s position and who embraces “new” medicine and forensic investigation.

Together, they begin to research the murder and to try to track down the killer.  As the story progresses, other murders are intertwined and cause them to wonder if this is another serial killer or just coincidental similarities linking the cases.  Additionally, the murderer is hot on their tails and tries his best to interfere with the investigation at every turn.

At the same time, Constable Nevil Hammersmith is compelled to investigate the case of a missing young boy who is found dead in a chimney.  Young children were often abducted and pressed into labor as “climbers” for chimney sweeps and this child apparently died in service to one.  Hammersmith is instructed not to investigate but can’t let the death go because it brings back memories of his childhood labors in the mines.

Grecian does an excellent job building the characters and bringing them to life – you are not only following the mystery of the murders but the development of these three men as they find their way in investigating them and in establishing themselves within the Murder Squad at Scotland Yard.

I won’t tell you any more about the plot – I want you to experience it for yourself, but I will say this: I didn’t want to put the book down and I was really sad when it was finished. I’m hoping that there are future stories planned for this crew as I was sad to say goodbye when the story ended.

If you’re looking for a great summer read, definitely consider The Yard.

Menu Plan Monday ~ 18 June

Happy Monday, everyone!

I hope you all had a great weekend.  We did. It was busy on Saturday, but Sunday was all about peace and rest.  Other than church, we took it easy all day. I even managed a two-hour nap!! I cooked SuperMan some homemade spaghetti for his Father’s Day lunch and we enjoyed some grilled burgers and hotdogs for dinner. It was a really nice day.

I haven’t had a menu planning post for a long time – I have either not had a plan (eek!) or have been recycling the same menus from previous weeks and therefore didn’t really have anything to share with you. I have been so busy, I’ve been sticking to the same tried-and-true recipes that I knew were easy, sure to please the family, and easy for me to shop for and prepare.

I have gotten a little bored, though, and so I have decided to try to incorporate some new recipes into the rotation this summer. We are finally  hitting out “summer stride,” which means slower days and more time for experimentation in the kitchen.  I’m looking for things I can prepare ahead and/or use my crock pot to cook.

So, here are this week’s plans:

I’m also planning to try some new things for lunches this week. Still working on those, but I want to get away from processed, “convenience” foods for the girls’ lunches. I’m thinking salads, wraps, things like that… if you have any suggestions that would be kid-friendly, please pass them along! I am hoping to broaden their palates this summer – and teach Big Girl to do some basic cooking/food prep to help me out and grow her skills in the kitchen.

Well, that is it for me today. Not feeling too hot – I think I have picked up a virus – so I am off to mega-dose on some Vitamin C and take some Tylenol.

Hope to have some scrapbooking posts for you this week – I have THREE weeks of Project Life to catch up on! I think I printed 60+ pictures this weekend. Ay-yi-yi!

Just a few feet

I seem to have picked up the habit of taking pictures of my feet – everywhere I go.

imgp4133

At first I wondered if I was weird or something… but now, I think it is pretty neat. It’s capturing the places I go, the clothes I wear and the things I do… from a very unique perspective.

I kind of like this trend.  Wonder where my feet will go next?

Fort Pulaski & the Junior Park Rangers

On Sunday last week, I awoke with renewed energy and the desire to “get out and do something” rather than just sitting around Mom’s house all day. So, I decided to take the girls to see Fort Pulaski. It is very close to the house, only a few minutes away and on the way to the beach. The weather was perfect for some outside activities – overcast, windy and relatively cool (for June in Savannah, anyway)

— exploring the tunnels.

I was sending pictures to my brother all along the tour. He texted back and asked if the girls had run through the tunnels, replying “It’s mandatory when you are there.”  That was one of our favorite things to do when Mom would take us to the fort as kids.  The girls followed the tradition, exploring every nook and cranny.

img_1639

— what can you see? the lighthouse?

img_1641

— yes, I got in a few of the pictures!

We watched the cannon firings – which I totally loved and I think the kids were okay with – not too crazy about the noise.  It was quite impressive to imagine 35 cannons firing simultaneously in the heat of battle. And that was just the Union cannons. The Confederates had their own, firing at the same time. I couldn’t get over the thought of the noise, the chaos, and the heat/smoke/fires/damage. War is a messy, messy thing.

img_1646

The girls had workbooks they picked up at the visitor’s center and once they completed them they had the opportunity to be signed in as “Junior Park Rangers.”  They were pretty excited about the prospect and I thought the workbooks were a great idea to get them to look beyond the obvious and really SEE the fort, it’s history, and the stories behind the structures. I thought the park service did a great job with the books. They were age-appropriate (5-8 yr and 9-12 yr) and the girls enjoyed them, for the most part. Not sure if other National Parks have these, but if they do, I’d recommend that you check them out.

img_1647

It was a great day and we had a marvelous time. I think my favorite part was watching the girls experience for the first time something that I loved so much as a child.  It’s neat seeing those memories reawaken and go full circle with your kids.

Back home again

I’m slowly catching up on “real life” after being gone for almost ten days. I unpacked the suitcases this morning and put everything on my bed so I have to put it away before I can go to sleep tonight. (I hope!) The girls’ bags are next and I’m hoping to get those put away today as well. Laundry is caught up, thanks to doing a load or two at Mom’s before we came home.

Monday’s drive was wet and rainy – I think we drove through some “monsoons” as I haven’t seen rain that heavy in a while – you could hardly see in front of you.

img_1566

Now, I’m just trying to get into a rhythm for the summer days – work for me and play for the girls. Trying to find that balance between working every waking hour because I don’t have anywhere I have to be and making time for some fun with the girls. I’m planning a few vacation days here and there with no specific plans – I think the girls and I will wake up and decide on the adventure of the day depending on what we feel like. Maybe the zoo, maybe the pool or something like that. I want to keep it easy and simple this year.

Later this week, I’ll share a few pictures of the adventures we had in Savannah last weekend and maybe a few more from my work trip, but how exciting are airport pictures and office buildings? I’m not so sure.

I’m hoping to get my Project Life pictures printed and in the album this week – I have two weeks’ worth to catch up on and a TON of pictures from last week. I’m excited, though, not overwhelmed, and can’t wait to write down the stories.

Friday night SuperMan and I will be going to the Shakespeare Festival – we’ve gone every summer since before Big Girl was born.  This week’s production is a musical version of Twelfth Night. Should be interesting. I love this company and they always put on a top-notch show. I’m thinking about packing a picnic dinner to enjoy before the show – they have outdoor seating and the weather is supposed to be nice. Might be a nice (cheap) date night idea…

Gracie cat is sick – she apparently got into a scuffle with another cat (we think) over the weekend and we came home Monday night to find her with an abscess the size of a golf ball on the side of her neck. I took her to the vet yesterday and they lanced it, got her cleaned up and put her on antibiotics.  (gross) She ended up with a bath, too, but her reward is that she gets to stay inside with us for a few weeks while she heals.  She is pretty happy even though she is sick – just purring away 24/7. Scooby is rather nonplussed about the whole thing and keeps giving me dirty looks like “I can’t believe you let HER in here.” She’s been annoyed with Gracie ever since Gracie was a kitten and used to run circles around her. It is no surprise that she is not happy to be sharing her people and house with her, but she will have to deal with it while we nurse the sick one back to health.

Well, I’m off to catch up on more of the never-ending, always-growing to-do list for work. More pictures and stories coming soon.

Images from the road

I’m traveling this week for work – and even though I AM working hard I am having a blast. Lots of memories from years’ past when I used to come out here regularly, and I’m enjoying catching up with work buddies that I usually only get to “see” as a voice on a conference call.

The weather is beautiful, although the trip out here was rough with about 4 hours of weather delays (ugh) – once I arrived, though, California has made it up to me with lots of sunny days and balmy temperatures.

I forgot how much I love it out here.

Hello, HQ!
Hello, HQ!

Tonight, I’m having dinner with my brother (I can’t wait) and then tomorrow is my last day of meetings. Today I managed to find my way across the San Mateo Bridge, over 3 different freeways and to our Pleasanton offices to see my folks there. I had a great lunch at Johnny Garlic’s (Guy Fieri‘s place) with them and we had a great time. (good food, too – someone had an pancetta/apple/brie/balsamic glazed pizza I was dying to try but too shy to ask for a bite! Now I wish I had!)

Friday it is home again – hope that the trip is uneventful and I can’t wait to see SuperMan and the girls.  It’s nice to get out here again – reminds me of how much I love my job and the company I work for.

I’ll try to post again soon.

Have a great week, guys!

Taking a little break

I will be traveling for work next week and this weekend is filled with recitals, so I will be taking a little hiatus from blogging.

I’ll be back soon with stories from my trip and pictures of not-so-tiny-little-dancers as well.

Take care!

9:15 am

It’s 9:15 on a Thursday morning. The first Thursday of the summer vacation for the girls.  Angelina came stumbling downstairs about thirty minutes ago, complaining that Daddy woke her up when he got up and that is why she slept so late. I find this funny because it’s really only about fifteen minutes later than she has been waking up all week, but to her it must seem like a major upset to her schedule.  Mary is still crashed upstairs, falling into the sleep patterns that teens seem to have – stay up late, sleep even later. I’ll go wake her in just a little while – I’m trying not to let her sleep past 9:30 simply because it means she is up so much later at night when she does (and then I’m up that much later!)

img_1602

I’ll lure her into wakefulness with some of the chocolate muffins I have baking in the oven. It is one of their favorite breakfast treats and I’ve been making muffins every morning this week – lemon poppy seed, berry, chocolate, etc. They love them right out of the oven, when they are so steamy that you can hardly eat them and the berries and chocolate chips are just gooey goodness in your mouth.

img_1600

I’m sitting in my office at my desk, have already read through the emails that came in last night while I was sleeping. Most are just ones where I have been copied on the message and require no action. There are a few that I’ll have to tackle with some action, but right now I’m just not ready for that.  So, I’m sipping my second cup of Earl Grey and half paying attention to the Live! with Kelly Ripa show.  Kristin Stewart is on and I wonder, as I look at her, when she will change her makeup and hair style so that she doesn’t still look like Bella Swan.

img_1599

My office is rather a shambles – I have all sorts of papers scattered about and things are upside down as I make piles of things to take with me on my trip next week – things to take to Mom, things to remember to take to HQ.  The suitcase is 80% packed with my work clothes and I still need to pack the non-work clothes that I’ll need for the layover at Mom’s before and after the HQ trip.  Have yet to begin to pack the girls’ clothes although I am hopeful Mary Beth will take care of hers and Angelina’s should be quick and easy – toss in some shorts, tops and bathing suits and she’s good to go.

I’m getting a little, well, stressed is not really the right word and anxious sounds negative – so I’m not sure how to describe the feeling – about the trip. I am getting that half-here, half-there type of mindset. I remember living this way years ago when I was traveling a lot for work – part of my mind is in the present moment and part of my mind is already on the trip, anticipating things that will occur and trying to be sure I’ve planned/prepared/packed for those potentials. It’s a little stressful and makes me feel disconnected, in a way, from my family, but it is also the way I have learned to make sure that my trip is not any more stressful than it has to be – by trying to be prepared for as much as I can ahead of time. Now, I just have the added challenge of taking care of the family as well – preparing for their needs while I’m gone as well as my own. (as I type this I’m making a mental note to double-check that all the bills are paid and nothing is due while I’m gone.)

The weather is cool outside right now – has not warmed up yet for the day, although it is supposed to be another scorcher. I’ve just reset the thermostat to 75, which is where I try to keep it all day long. I usually have to turn it down at night when Rob gets home as he likes it a little cooler (we all do) when we sleep.  There’s supposed to be rain coming in and cooling things off but today the temps are supposed to be in the 90’s. I wish the pool was open and I could take the girls this afternoon, but they are repairing tiles and Angelina has her ballet recital rehearsal at 4:00 today.

I’ll have to get prepared for that little excursion – making sure that the skirt on her costume is pinned in place and getting her all dolled up and ready to go in time. That should prove interesting since I have conference calls right up until the time we have to leave. Thankfully, she is getting more self-sufficient and Mary Beth is big enough to help her, too.  I can’t wait to see the dance and to snap pictures of the rehearsal.  Recitals are Saturday and Sunday and then we will be finished with all of our obligations for the summer.  Then it will be time to relax and enjoy (in between work, that is)

So, what are you up to this morning?

Project Life “Tuesday”

well, let’s just pretend it’s Tuesday, okay?

The Mom Creative Hello and welcome to Project Life Tuesday! If you are stopping by from The Mom Creative, welcome & thanks for clicking over! If you are not, you might want to click over there when you’re done here for some more great Project Life inspiration!

I’m using the Clementine Edition of the Project Life kit offered by Becky Higgins, supplemented by some digital extras and using up the random bits I have from twelve-plus years of scrapbooking. Some weeks are more digital than others and some weeks are full of frills and furbelows. It just depends on my mood.

This week was more basic. Busy, busy week last week and then a weekend full of family fun left little time for much embellishment of the pages. But, I’m happy with them.

Let’s start with the whole spread. I had three inserts: report cards, promotion certificates, and pictures from our Saturday outing.img_1590

(remember, click on an image to see it larger)

And here’s a close up of the left page. I have plans to put journaling there on that center spot – just haven’t gathered my thoughts yet on what I want to say about her promotion ceremony.img_1591

Then the front of the 3-pocket insert: (with the other page peeking out)img_1592

And a close up:img_1593

Man, those puppies were cuuuuute.  Had to just WALK AWAY so that they didn’t come home with us. Twin brother/sister and totally adorable. I’m sure they were adopted before the day was out.

And the back of the insert- hot and tired on our way back home from our mountain excursion:

img_1594

And the last page. I love the before/after pictures. I may go back and do a digital scrapbook page for those – first day of school and last day of school all together. LOVE the way it turned out.

Little Bit said “Man! I changed a lot last year!” Yes, baby, you did!!

img_1595

Fun on Sunday in the pool with friends and a run-down of the week on the journal cards. Fortunately, I have a few pictures already for this week… and then next week should be jam-packed with my travel pics and the girls’ at Ammi Camp!
