Have You Seen This?

This video is going viral on the net right now.  Normally, I don't bother forwarding, but this one is quite funny and very spot-on with the observations of society these days.

I hope you enjoy!

This is not his dog

This is not his dog, he says.

She’s mine.

I picked her out at the rescue place. I talked him into adopting her.

So, technically, he says, she’s mine.

I’m not sure she knows this, though.

We have snow here today.  A rarity in the south.  The kids are thrilled; they have the day off school and they are trying to figure out what they can use as an improvised toboggan to slide down our hills.

IMGP1929_0001

I am using the snow to my advantage and have told them they must clean their rooms before they can go outside. (hee hee) We will see if it works. I am doubtful as our standards of cleanliness are not even close to each other.

popcorn, cantaloupe and cake. Yum.

IMGP1940

Buster has decided that he is most definitely not a snow dog and is hiding in my office under a blanket in hopes no one notices him.

IMGP1932

Sydney thinks the white stuff is yummy and it eating all that she can get in her snout. It’s pretty funny to watch.

IMGP1928

I am just so thankful –

  • for the heat we have to keep us warm and the roof over our heads
  • for SuperMan who is home with us today and will entertain the kids while I work.
  • for the fact that the Miata wouldn’t make it to the stop sign so he had to stay home.
  • for my girls’ excitement and joy in something so simple as snowfall.

I am hoping to get some templates posted this weekend. Depends on how much time I spend out in the snow, I think.

The best laid plans

I am a planner.  1696964330_e832798090I like figuring out what we’re going to do, when we’ll do it and what we need to do whatever it is we’ll be doing.  I like making plans almost as much as I like making lists.  I like “executing” the plans (as they say in corporate-speak) and seeing my plans come to fruition.

Life, however, often has other ideas.

And that usually means your plans fly out the window (bye, bye) and you have to adapt and make new plans.

And usually, I’m okay with that.

But there are those times when your plans get changed, and changed, and changed.

And when that happens the only thing you can do is throw your plans out the window and give up any hope of making new plans and just live minute-by-minute.  And sometimes, that is when the best things happen.  When you throw the plans out the window and just LIVE.

This past week was one of those times.

The original plan (from months ago and part of our yearly tradition) was that we would be heading to my mom’s for the week of New Year’s – we drive down early in the week and hang out there, visiting with family and enjoying a low country boil (it’s a Southern thing – boiled shrimp, potatoes, corn and sausage cooked in a spicy blend) and sit outside by the fire until midnight with our family and friends.

Then, we all got sick.

So, in the interest of not making everyone down there sick, we decided not to go down.  And that was okay.  I made a new plan.

I figured I’d spend the week tucked in my house, scrapbooking, blogging, and enjoying my family.  We made tentative plans with the neighbors for a mild celebration on New Year’s and I went shopping for food to prepare.

Then, we got another change in plans.

My step-dad’s father passed away.  Now, this wasn’t really a surprise. He was 89 years old. He had been in increasingly declining health and had really taken a downturn in the last few weeks.  We knew it was coming, we weren’t surprised.

So, plan “C” kicks into gear and off we head to my mom’s after all.  This time, we’re planning a funeral and working on a menu to prepare for the guests.

And here I have been since Thursday.  At my mom’s.  And you know what?  Although it is not how you would want to spend your time, it has been great.  For a change, we have been the ones to take care of them (my mom and step-dad).  SuperMan and I spent most of Friday cooking and getting things ready.

Today was the funeral.  I was able to be there and stand beside my step-dad for support.  It was nice to support him instead of him supporting me (as he has done in so many ways all these years – he’s really been my father for most of my adult life and I love him as if he was).

It wasn’t how we’d planned to spend our New Year’s weekend.  It certainly wasn’t what we’d have chosen if we’d been asked weeks ago.  But, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Snow – Southern Style

Those of you who live in more Northern climes (WLN!) will probably laugh at my excitement over the piddly little snowfall we had tonight.  I have to agree, it’s pretty sad.  But when it rarely snows and hardly ever sticks, we Southerners tend to take our snowfall with great glee.

It had been sleeting all day – pretty steadily since around 3PM.  My brother (who lives in the Pacific Northwest) had gotten four inches of snow last night and my girls were green with envy.  So when the sleet started to accumulate, they were excited.  (as was Sydney)

Sydney was the funniest, though. She tried to eat the ice.

IMGP1897_edited-1

Buster was hiding on his bed in the house, hoping we had forgotten he was there. He hates the cold and hates the wet even worse.

The girls were already asleep when the snow started.  I had to sneak out to take pictures.

IMGP1898_edited-1

Even though it isn’t much, it sure is pretty.

and now, off to bed. Busy day tomorrow.

Friday Five on Saturday

Well, as we say in the South, I’m a day late and a dollar short.

Sorry I missed the Friday Five yesterday. I was so caught up in catching up on my JYC album that this totally slipped my mind.  But, as I sit here this morning sipping my tea and eating the yummy breakfast SuperMan made for me, I have been surfing my favorite blogs.

I have some awesome holiday ideas to share with you.

Without further adieu, here are my Five Favorite New Holiday Ideas.  I may not make any of them anytime soon, but they are way cool and totally cute.

1. Tiny Gingerbread Houses perched on a mug: These are so cute!  I saw these over at the Simply Handmade blog, but she found them on the Not Martha blog. Both are awesome and worth visiting.

2. Anonymous Christmas Elf: This is such a neat idea! All it really takes is some creativity, a little time, and a tiny bit of money. I will be doing this next year for sure.

3. Truffles: I found this one on the Sorta Crunchy blog. Still thinking it may be worth trying as we have some serious chocoholics here.

4. This one is not necessarily holiday-related, but I like the idea because one of the challenges during the school break is keeping your kids occupied so you don’t hear the dreaded “I’m bored!”  My oldest has been asking to scrap digitally and I’ve just not gotten brave enough to let her yet.  But this article gives some great tips – I think I may just give her a go.

5. And the last one – totally cute idea, especially if you have little people who want to play with your nativity scene all through Advent: A wooden block nativity as seen over at the Pioneer Woman’s blog. What? You’ve never read her blog? What are you waiting for?

Ok, that is it for me. I have five batches of cookies to bake today and company coming tomorrow and Tuesday. Lots to do. No more computer time for me.

Color and Loveliness

Look at this.

If you love color like I do, you are probably salivating now.

How pretty are these?

I can just imagine taking them and festooning them with some ribbons and stickers and brightly colored papers… and tucking them in my purse to pull out whenever I need to jot a note or an appointment down.

Sigh.

Just lovely.

Santa? Do you hear me? I love these.

Sunday Scrappin’

Here’s a link to my weekly post over at The Lady at Home’s blog.

This week’s topic? Scrapbooking during the holidays.

Friday Five

Okay, I am jumping on the blog/net bandwagon and will be offering my Friday Five each week, starting with this week… It may be five favorite products, five favorite websites, whatever strikes my fancy for the week.  The only thing I know for sure is that there will be five of them and it will post every Friday!

This week’s Friday Five are five of my favorite blogs.  I recently finished a Blogging for Scrapbookers class and discovered a ton of new, interesting blogs. I thought I would share some of those with you.

1.  Elinjanne’s blog: I love her writing style and really love her scrapbooking style.  I have been watching her Journal Your Christmas album as she has shared it on her blog. Her photos are spectacular and envious of all the snow that she gets in Norway. (although I am sure this southern gal would die in temps that cold)

2. Dolly’s blog: Dolly also did the Blogging for Scrapbookers class and I was first introduced to her then. I have really enjoyed reading her daily entries and learning more about her life through her scrapbook pages and blog entries.  She has beautiful scrapbook pages and the most adorable kitties.

3. Ann’s blog: Ann is doing the JYC class and has created the most interesting 6×12 vertical album. I was so intrigued by her photos of her pages, I just kept going back to see more. Now, I am so inspired by her pages and really enjoy reading about her adventures. And the fact that she considers herself a “mad scientist” cracks me up. I have often felt that way myself!

The last two are not from a class, but they are two that I check faithfully every day:

4. Cathy’s blog: Cathy Zielske’s blog is awesome in so many ways. I love her dry sense of humor, her photographs are always awesome and her scrapbook page designs are ones I almost ALWAYS scraplift.  If you haven’t checked out her blog, click on over there and enjoy yourself!

5. Ree’s blog: Oh, my.  When I stumbled across this blog, I thought I had found my long lost twin.  Ree is so funny and her entries have me alternately laughing out loud at her life observations and keen wit or sighing at her gorgeous photographs.  Ree is the Pioneer Woman.  She cooks, she bakes, she homeschools, she’s married to the Marlboro Man and lives on a working cattle ranch.  The pictures and stories of her life are one of the highlights of my day.

Well, that is all for now. I hope to get some scrapbooking done this weekend and will share some in my next post (if I can get the sickies in my house well, that is).

Lists here, Lists there, Lists, Lists, everywhere

I am a big list-maker.  I am also a big paper girl. I love the tactile sensation of writing things down… and then the satisfaction I get from crossing things off the list.  Whether it is groceries, gift lists, to-do’s, packing lists, whatever. I have a list for it. (surely I’m not the only one?)

Here are some of my lists:

IMGP1689_edited-1

The obligatory “HONEY-DO” list, the planned dinner choices for the next week, and the grocery list – notice that someone wrote an address on my list – sacrilege!  🙂

IMGP1690_edited-1

My husband laughs at me because I rewrite my grocery list before going to the store.  Call me crazy, but I like a nice, neat, LEGIBLE list when I go shopping. But when I’m adding things to my list as it hangs, vertically, on my refrigerator, legibility is not what I’m going for. I’m just documenting things I need. So,I rewrite the list before I go to the store. Invariably, this reminds me of things that are NOT on the list and should be. It also helps if I decide to pull out the coupons. Then I can mark for which items I have coupons and be sure not to forget to turn them in at the checkout.

Christmas is the king of list-making time for me.

I have the “TO BUY” list. The “TO MAKE” list which goes nicely with the “TO GIVE” list as I usually give homemade goodies to our friends and family. (which reminds me that I haven’t made this list yet (eek!).

Then there are the shopping lists for the kids (which has to be very discreetly tucked away as my 8 year old is now getting very snoopy about things like Christmas gifts) and the list of things to purchase for my husband and the stocking stuffers.

I am not doing very good with the list writing this season, though. I have gone almost completely digital this year with my calendar and time management (which was a HUGE adjustment for me – I still carry a little bitty calendar as my “binkie” because I’m so tied to writing things down!)  I did a lot of purchasing online this year and used my email confirmations of my purchases (stored in a folder that was mislabeled to discourage snoopiness) as my “PURCHASED” list.

IMGP1691_edited-1

But, I’m feeling rather disorganized because I never made the master “TO BUY” list.  So, tonight I sat down and wrote one.  Now, I’m feeling a little pressure because I have so much to do! I will have to schedule a shopping day soon and get it knocked out.  I am pretty good at that, though. IF I have my list.

What about you? Are you a list maker? Or do you fly by the seat of your pants? (I love that phrase!)
