I have a new addiction

I have never been a coffee drinker.  Never.  Not even in college. Didn't like the bitterness it had.  I've always loved the way it smelled, though.  I often wished coffee tasted as good as it smelled, but for me it didn't.

So, I was quite happy with my tea each morning, and being the outcast whenever we’d meet people at a coffee shop for a chat.

“Nope, nothing for me, thank you.” I’d always say.
And then it happened.
It began all so innocently… a trip to Oregon (coffee drinking capital of the world, I think) with my mom.  My sister-in-law introduces Mom to a Starbucks Hazelnut Latte.  No, thank you, I said. I don't drink coffee.
Mom insisted I take a sip. I said no. She offered again.  Finally, I succumbed.  And it was ok.  Not bitter, not scalding hot, but not something I really cared to taste again.

But something must’ve happened on that trip.  Maybe it was the passive exposure to all the coffee everyone else consumed.  Maybe that one little sip awakened tastebuds in my mouth that I never used before.  I don’t know.
What I do know is this.  I have become a coffee addict.  Slowly, surely, and in a good part thanks to Starbucks.
First it was the Hazelnut Lattes.  Now, I’ve branched out – Mocha something-or-others… and some awesome concoction the barista at the Macon Starbucks made for me.  It’s got toffee nut syrup, mocha syrup, espresso, and I don’t know what else. It’s probably eight million calories, so I only indulge in one occasionally, but it is good.  Kind of like drinking a turtle candy in your coffee. Yummy.
I have been rationing myself, due to the exhorbitant prices for my favorite Starbucks drinks.  Hard to justify $4 for a coffee drink when I supposedly don’t like coffee.

And then I found Joffrey’s Coffee.  Oh. My. Goodness.
They have a flavor called “Sinful Delight.”  Sinfuldelight It’s description on the bag reads thusly: “Chocolate Butterscotch with Nut Overtones.”  I saw that in the Publix and thought, “Ok, that sounds really good.”  I bought it, thinking if I didn’t like it I would give it my mom.
Sorry, Mom, you’re not going to get this bag.  It is soooo good!

Now, I'm dreaming about coffee.  Sitting at my desk thinking about coffee. When the cravings come I can taste it before I even have a sip.  Mind you, I'm not into all that plain coffee junk.  Give me the good stuff.  The sweet, flavored coffees that I can doctor up with some half and half and pretend like I've got a high-dollar latte from 'bucks.

And I have invested in a coffee press.  I was told I'd get better flavor from the beans that way. (Am I becoming a coffee snob?) I don't know if that is true (the flavor part, and the snob part) but I do know I like the fact that I can brew only one or two cups in my cute little press.  And, no hulking coffee maker taking up space on my counter.

I never, ever, in a million years thought I would like coffee.  Who knew? I guess I like coffee after all!

White Collar

We watched a great new show last night.

The premiere was actually a few weeks ago (I love DVRs) but we finally sat down to watch the recording last night.
White Collar is a combination of mystery, adventure, and comedy all rolled into one.

The premise is this: an incarcerated con artist who offers to help an FBI agent (who just happened to have arrested him four years previously) capture various white collar criminals.  The premiere episode was very entertaining.  The mystery/chase of the "bad guy" almost becomes the back story to the interactions between the main characters.

The suave, debonair Neal Caffery has the ability to charm (con) almost anyone into doing or giving away anything.  His connections to the underworld of con artists proves valuable to FBI agent Peter Burke as the case progresses.
Burke, your typical somewhat stuffy FBI agent, is charming in a Darrin (from Bewitched in the 70's) kind of way. (He even looks like a modern-day Darrin to me)  He struggles with his decision to let Caffery out of prison to help with solving the crime and doing the "right" thing by letting him stay in prison and serve his time.  He is a great foil to Caffery's smooth talking and together they make a great pair.

I think this one will go on our roster of shows to record and watch on a regular basis.  It's definitely worth checking out this Friday night (on USA) if you haven't seen it yet.
My general ranking for a TV show goes something like this:

whitecollar

Does it make me laugh?    Yes

Did it entertain me the whole hour?   Yes

Was it worth staying up late for (i.e. losing sleep)?  Yes

Will I watch again?  Yes, definitely

*oh, and Matt Bomer is definitely worth staying up for – just looking at him is fun. 🙂

Today…

I am starting a new Monday tradition.  Mondays will be my Simple Woman’s Daybook post. Simply, but effectively, capturing the moment. I hope you will join me!

Outside my window… my yard is covered in a blanket of leaves; the sky is brightening and the neighborhood is waking up.

I am thinking…of all the things there are to do today – and prioritizing them.

I am thankful for…my husband.

From the kitchen…Pork chops for dinner tonight.   BBQ is on my mind, though.

I am wearing…velour warm-up suit, white t-shirt.

I am creating…bulletin boards for the church volunteer hallway.

I am going…to focus on having a good day today.

I am reading…nothing right now. I have started 3 books but none have “grabbed” me yet.

I am hoping…work comes quickly for my husband. Layoffs are no fun.

I am hearing…the washer and dryer running.

Pondering these words… Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Prov. 3:5-6

Around the house…the little messes from a weekend with the family home are rampant. Must get things tidied up today.

One of my favorite things…peace and quiet after everyone goes to work and school.

A few plans for the rest of the week…re-focusing on taking care of myself so I can take better care of others.

The Bachelor

The Bachelor

I admit it… I watch The Bachelor.  I can't help it.

I know it's probably 85% fake, or edited so much it might as well be.  But I am always hooked from the second episode every season. I have my favorite picks and I watch to see if he/she makes it all the way to the end.

I don't know if you watch or not – or if you saw the last season of the Bachelor or not.  But I thought you might enjoy this.

Regis & Kelly did a spoof of the Bachelor.  It's cute.
Since my brain is fried on Fridays, I thought you might enjoy this instead of some silly random thoughts from me.

I promise, scrapbooking stuff tomorrow (or Sunday at the latest).

Until then, I give you: The Bachelor.

Today…

Outside my window… the clouds are trying to overtake the sun and the leaves are changing into a beautiful blanket of color.

I am thinking…of all the things I need to accomplish today – there is not enough time!

I am thankful for…good friends, a loving family, God’s blessings.

From the kitchen…homemade oatmeal craisin cookies; ham for dinner.

I am wearing…comfy clothes; must get “dressed” for the day still.

I am creating…a positive mood and outlook to help me be productive today.

I am going…to love on my kids when they get home this afternoon.

I am reading…You Had Me at Halo (a silly, but entertaining book)

I am hoping…my husband’s job continues to be productive and he is not laid off again.

I am hearing…”I Will Rise” on the radio.

Around the house…my cats are sleeping, the puppy is trashing the yard, and the big dog is napping with one eye out for the pup’s attacks.

One of my favorite things…my hot tea in the mornings… earl grey.

A few plans for the rest of the week…Ballet, Jazz, making dinner for a friend who is recently home from hospital.

simply amazing

I was at my mom’s house a few weeks ago… it is very humid there (they live near the coast) and so all sorts of things grow in places you would never imagine.

One morning, I went outside to swing with my little girl.  She said she couldn’t sit on the swing because there were “prickly things” on her swing and she was afraid they would poke her if she sat down.

As I bent down to look at the “prickly things,” this is what I saw:

Picture 013

How cool is that?

Perfectly formed teeny, tiny mushrooms, growing on the seat of the swing.  And in a perfect spiral!simply amazing

Something so small that most of us would never have noticed.

Something so mundane that could be easily overlooked.

And yet…

A thing of beauty.

There is no reason (that I know of) for the mushrooms to grow in a perfect spiral.  They had such teeny little stems – they were smaller than a straight pin.  And the tops were perfect little cups turned upside down, balancing on the fragile stems.

How awesome.

Glorious beauty on a swing after the rain.

God’s wonder there for us to see… if only we look.
