Top 5 things to do this Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is fast approaching…

It can be a time of great fun, or great stress… depending on how you approach things. I usually enjoy Thanksgiving – we spend the week at my mom’s house and visit with family throughout our visit. This year, I am hoping to shake things up a little.

Here are my top 5 things I’d like to do this year:

5. Try something new for the menu.
I have found a new recipe I want to try. It’s for Colonial Corn Pudding – which evolved from the popular colonial Indian pudding, which was itself an adaptation of porridge. Anyway, it sounds yummy and decadent because it’s chock full of things I love.

4. Go for a walk every day.

I have been trying to get myself on a new regimen of walking and it has not been something I’ve been very good at maintaining. So, while I’m off, have the time, and am over-indulging in other areas, I think I’ll try to squeeze a nice walk in every day… Besides, the weather is usually perfect in Savannah this time of year.

3. Catch up with old friends, not just family.
I’m hoping to catch up with my old high school chums this year. We are planning an “After the Turkey is Gone Get Together” and are hoping to make it a yearly event. I can’t wait to see everyone – some people I haven’t seen in, well, I’m not going to confess how many years it’s been since graduation…let’s just say it’s a long time and leave it at that!

2. Live in the moment.
Life is too short to be spent wasting time worrying. I have recently been reawakened to this concept. It’s a hard one to live by, especially for me as I am a professional-grade worrier. But, I am trying hard to trust that God provides for us and our expression of faith is to trust that He will give us WHAT we need WHEN we need it.
I want to focus this year on savoring each moment, filing away the memories of this precious time.

1. Stay awake after the turkey dinner!
Let’s see if I can beat that l-tryptophan this year! I wonder…

Hooray for Friday

Continuing to capture life as it happens… this is actually fun. Will be interesting to see how the actual scrapbooking project comes out.
Got my car back yesterday. It’s not fixed, but I am tired of hassling with the dealership. I’ll just call Chrysler and get them to handle it. I guess my grandpa was right when he said never buy Chrysler. I am sure he is wagging his finger at me from heaven now.

The girls were so happy to have their car back as well. Angelina fired up a video before we left the dealership parking lot yesterday afternoon.

The leaves are soooo beautiful right now. As I drive in/out of our subdivision I am just overwhelmed by God’s glorious bounty and the beauty of the mountains. I keep stopping to snap pictures just because I know in a few days it will all be washed away by the rain.

But this part of the year is my absolute favorite. Mother Nature is dressed in her finest clothes and is showing off in all her glory. It makes my heart sing (in my mom’s words) to see the blue skies, golden, amber and red leaves contrasted against the rich deep greens of the evergreens…. but I am waxing poetic here.

Just realized I forgot to take a picture of my yummy lunch that Rob brought me. Yummy fried rice and wonton soup. I’ve been hungry for it for days.

Such a thoughtful hubby… makes me wonder if he’s buttering me up for something. 🙂

More soon.

Life is good.

I’m challenging myself this week… I’m trying to capture the moments throughout my days (thursday to thursday) for a week. I want to create a scrapbook of these moments to capture what life is like right now… things change so quickly… our kids grow, develop new skills, we change, life goes on.

I want to be able to remember what life is like for me at 40 and to look back on it when I’m 60 and remember.

So, everyone thinks I’m nuts. I am taking pictures of everything and anything. It’s forcing me to slow down and to consider what is important to me right now… what reflects my life right now… and how I REALLY spend my days. It’s pretty cool.

So, here’s Today:

Up early – can’t sleep because Rob is cleaning the kitchen (isn’t that sweet?) and banging pots and pans around. But, can’t complain because I walk downstairs to find a spotless kitchen, running dishwasher, folded clothes and, the best of all, hot water for my tea. Sigh. Life is good.

Make MB’s lunch – leftover pizza, chips, pudding, and water.

Fix the girls’ tea and find some clean school uniforms in the dryer. (warm and cozy)

Wake the girls and head into my room to dress.

Fix breakfast for the girls – Lucky Charms today. Breakfast of champions.

Drive the rental car to school – hope mine is ready today…

Stop by and pick up a biscuit for breakfast. YUM. Ham and cheese, all hot and gooey.

Back at home…. checking email, updating FB (computer crack for me) and getting my workday started.

And so it goes… Stay tuned for more updates as the week goes on. And, join me! See what your life is all about.

Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend was spent hanging out with some great friends, the Stones. We took a short overnight trip to Chattanooga and crammed as much in as we could. Lookout Mountain, the Aquariums, IMAX, the Children's Museum… you name it, we did it!
We had a fantastic time and are so lucky to have such good friends to travel with. Now we have to plan our next adventure!

Birthday celebrations in Savannah

Last week, Rob and Lois celebrated birthdays — way too far above the magic number of "29" for us to count!

We celebrated together in Savannah with the family…

First Day of School

There’s nothing like the first day of school to bring on waves of nostalgia.  Especially when everyone at the school makes such noise about how big your girls are getting to be!  They love it, of course, because it validates that they are growing and getting big.  I hate it and love it. I’m proud of my girls – I’m bursting with pride at their accomplishments and the fact that they are growing into such lovely ladies.  I hate it, though, because it reminds me that they are growing up and that soon they won’t need their mommy like they do now.  I know it’s my job – to help them become independent ladies – but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.

So, this morning, Mary B decides I don’t need to walk her in to school.  She is big now and just wants to ride in the carpool lane. I am surprised and a little sad when she makes the announcement. I mean, I knew this would come one day, but I was really  hoping to make it to, say, college, before this happened.  Seriously, though, what a big girl she was… all puffed up with excitement and ready to bound out of the car and on to her newest adventure.  As I watched her race into the building without even a backward glance, I had to think my baby bird has flown the nest.

Fast forward about 2 minutes and I’m walking Little Bit into school.  Quite the different story.  Suddenly, she has developed tentacles and I have this junior-sized Octopus hanging on my leg.  She speaks politely to the administrators, telling them good morning and thanking them for their compliments on her new haircut.  But, she does all of this with an iron grip on my leg.

We walk to her classroom and greet her friends and teachers.  All the while, she’s decided that she wants me to stay at school with her – ALL DAY. Uh, well, I don’t think that’ll work.  So, in the space of less than 10 minutes I go from being wistful and longing for the days when MB needed me to walk her in to school to trying to extricate myself from a pint-sized octopus who has decided I need to repeat Pre-K! Isn’t life ironic!

All in all, it was a great first day.  I am not really sure who was the more excited. Me or the girls.

Now, we just have to make it through the next nine months!
